VP of R&D

Engineering Managers see their team as their product. While they are technically credible and know the details of what engineers work on, their time is spent safeguarding their team’s health, hiring a world-class team, and putting them in the best position to succeed. They own the delivery of product commitments and are always looking to improve productivity. They must also coordinate across departments to accomplish collaborative goals. A VP of R&D unifies and focuses all of the development and is part of the executive team.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a fully distributed/remote environment
  • Experience scaling R&D from 20 to 100 people
  • 5+ years experience managing teams in mid/small size companies
  • 5+ years experience managing managers
  • Amazing verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a world-class remote-first engineering culture that balances between quality and speed.
  • Drive recruiting of a world-class team at all levels
  • Help their managers and engineers grow their skills and experience
  • Measure and improve the happiness of Engineering
  • Define and measure project management processes
  • Implement and measure process improvements that are causal to the most critical needs
  • Participate and support the psychological safety of the department
  • Build a cultural foundation of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Drive quarterly OKRs around company goals
  • Be accountable for product quality, security, and performance
  • Work across departments within engineering
  • Work closely with Senior leaders of Product Management to provide a consistent/successful interface between
  • Engineering Development and Product Management
  • Work with company leadership to make sure Engineering Development is aligned with company-wide goals
  • Support constantly changing priorities between product features, availability, performance, security, and reliability
  • Support process for incident management including quality control of RCAs

Performance Indicators:

  • Sales Renewal CSAT
  • Hiring Actual vs. Plan
  • Accelerate metrics(MTTR etc)
  • R&D OKRs
